Another year has come and gone. Take a look back at what has helped shape the image and lifestyle of foreign and Chinese tastes alike and one thing seems to come to mind in 2013 – Beer Craft Breweries. Beijing is currently undergoing a microbrewery revolution with new and creative options appearing every few months and there were no shortages of great places to try authentic new concoctions in 2013. Below is a list a of the most popular selections of the year:
Great Leap Brewery
Founded in 2010 in the back alleys of Doujiao Hutong Number 6, they recently expanded their presence to a flagship brewery in a very expat-friendly location behind the Holiday Inn Express near Worker’s Stadium. The new venue offers over 1200 square meters of comfortable beer-tasting space with private booths abundant. The brewery prides itself on only providing premium ingredients to its customers and you can expect up to 40 different choices every year. Their cheeseburgers (made from fresh, non-frozen ground beef) and chicken wings also go very well with the beers.
Slow Boat Brewery Taproom
Another brewery carefully hidden in the hutongs, Slow Boat is home to one of Beijing’s most popular microbrews. Prices are reasonable ranging from RMB 30 to RMB 60 and can be as many as 20 beers on tap at any given time. There are attractive happy hour deals and many find the “cafeteria” style décor refreshing and inviting to opening up conversation with new friends. Come for the beer but stay for the burgers, bratwurst, and cheeses.
Capital Brewing Company (京A)
Started by a duo from North America who were previously not in the brewing business, both parties initially had no intention of making the business a full-time job. But as the hobby gained more and more interest with their friends and local community, they eventually caved in and made their passion into something the whole city could enjoy. With interesting concoctions consistently being created and improved upon such as Mandarin Orange Beer and Wasabi Beer, its no wonder business has continued to grow. The delicious brews can now be found in the American-South style restaurant – The Big Smoke – near Xin Dong Lu.
